There’s a secret to labeling files…

I label my computer files with the Fantastic File Naming Formula™ and it works. It’s the fastest way to organize large amounts of computer files. With each file you label, you’ll notice that this formula is intuitive. The best part – this formula helps you remember where your files are located.

Before You Label Your Computer Files: Ask Yourself 4 Questions

For every file on your computer, you should ask yourself four questions:

1. What type of file is this? What is the purpose of this file?

2. Can you classify this file further?

3. What name do you want to give this file? / What is the content of the file?

4. Are there more files like this one? Will a number count be needed?

Case #1: Label assignment outlines for Entrepreneurship course

  1. What type of file is this? What is the purpose of this file? Classes
  2. Can you classify this further? Entrepreneurship
  3. What name do you want to give this file? Assignment-Name
  4. Are there more files like this one? Will a number count be needed? No

The result:

Label Computer Files

File Name: Classes_Entrepreneurship_[Assignment-Name].pdf

Case #2: Label a collection of gold textures for Photoshop

  1. What type of file is this? What is the purpose of this file? Resources (instead of indicating the file type, I chose to indicate the purpose for this file)
  2. Can you classify this further? Texture
  3. What name do you want to give this file? Gold
  4. Are there more files like this one? Will a number count be needed? Yes

The result:

Label Computer Files

File Name: Resources_Texture_Gold_1 or Resources_Texture_Gold_2 or Resources_Texture_Gold_3 …etcetera
